Why you need to act now
MTD for Income Tax is being introduced in phases from April 2026, when it becomes compulsory for people with taxable income of £50,000 or more. The incomes threshold goes down to £30,000 in 2027 and £20,000 in 2028. This means the start dates are approaching quickly.
For most self-employed people and landlords, the pressure point is simple: four reporting deadlines a year instead of one.
If you currently keep records in spreadsheets (or only tidy things up near the tax return deadline), now is the right time to put a proper MTD-ready process in place.

You can use THP for any or all parts of the MTD process. Here’s what it typically looks like:
1. Review
We assess your current record-keeping and reporting process and confirm what needs to change for MTD.
2. Migrate
We recommend the right cloud software and set you up with a process that fits your business (or property portfolio).
3. Manage (quarterly)
We keep the records on track and can prepare and submit your quarterly updates for you.
4. Finalise (year-end)
We complete the additional end-of-year submissions, so your tax position is properly finalised. This is also a good time to have a tax planning review and identify ways of saving money over the next few tax years.
Software we support
THP is not tied to one product. We recommend the tool that fits your needs, then we support it properly with a compliance service wrapped around it.
We work with the major MTD-ready platforms, including:
- FreeAgent (popular with sole traders)
- Hammock (specialist property software for landlords)
- Xero (great for larger or growing businesses)
If you already have other software such as QuickBooks, Sage or Zoho, we can often work with it. If you don’t, we will help you choose the right option and put a clean process in place.

FAQs
MTD for Income Tax is being introduced in phases, based on your qualifying income. If you are a sole trader or landlord and you are likely to meet the thresholds, it’s worth planning now.
For the detailed dates and thresholds, see our guide: What is Making Tax Digital?
Some people use spreadsheets with “bridging” tools, but most clients find a full cloud accounting setup is simpler, more reliable and easier to keep compliant – especially with quarterly reporting.
If you want to talk through the best approach for your situation, book a call.
HMRC is moving to a points-based penalty approach for MTD for Income Tax. If you are required to join from April 2026, HMRC have also said they will not apply penalty points for late quarterly updates in the first tax year (although penalties can still apply for late tax returns and late payment).
If you want to stay on the safe side, the simplest option is to put a service in place that keeps you on schedule.
