Accounts & Personal Tax Manager – Sutton Surrey

We are seeking an Accounts & Personal Tax Manager to work from our office in Sutton, Surrey.

Role Purpose
The Accounts & Personal Tax Manager is responsible for managing a portfolio of accounts and personal tax clients and undertaking / reviewing accounts work produced by the team. This includes oversight of limited company accounts, self-assessment tax returns, personal tax planning, and supporting high-net-worth individuals, directors, landlords, and sole traders. The role is 50% accounts focused, 50% tax.
Key Responsibilities
Personal Tax Compliance and Advisory
- Manage and review a portfolio of self-assessment tax returns (SA100), including income tax, dividend income, rental income, partnership shares, capital gains, and residency matters.
- Ensure all filings are completed accurately and submitted by HMRC deadlines.
- Oversee P11D preparation, making sure benefits-in-kind are correctly captured.
- Maintain robust audit trails, working papers, and documentation in line with ICAEW quality requirements.
- Provide ad-hoc tax advice covering:
- Capital gains tax (disposals, main residence relief, share disposals)
- Inheritance tax basics (nil rate bands, lifetime gifting, relief awareness)
- Tax-efficient remuneration for directors/shareholders
- Residency and domicile considerations
- Property tax considerations for landlords.
- Support clients in understanding tax implications and planning opportunities.
- Liaison with HMRC as required.
Accounts Compliance
- Manage accounts preparation assignments for micro and small entities.
- Prepare and review statutory accounts in line with FRS 102 Section 1A and FRS 105, ensuring disclosures are accurate and compliant.
- Identify complex accounting issues and escalate appropriately.
- Prepare or review tax computations for companies, partnerships, and sole traders.
- Complete Company Secretarial work
Client Portfolio Management
- Act as main contact for day-to-day client queries providing clear explanations, proactive guidance and building strong long-term relationships.
- Liaison with third parties as required (HMRC, mortgage brokers etc).
- Plan workflow for the tax season and accounting deadlines, ensuring timely delivery.
- Monitor WIP, manage budgets and support billing.
Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Essential
- Accountant qualified either through ICAEW/ACCA or by experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong client relationships both internally and externally.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritise workload across multiple clients and deadlines.
- Experience managing accounts and personal tax portfolios within a UK accountancy practice.
- Sound technical knowledge of UK GAAP, self-assessment, CGT, benefits and director-level tax issues.
- High standards of accuracy, ethics, confidentiality and professional judgement.
Desirable
- Experience with accounting and tax software (e.g., Iris, Xero, FreeAgent, Bright Workpapers).
